Introducing Dr. Masood

Every day at Think Research, we have the opportunity to work with a number of inspiring clinicians who have dedicated their lives to transforming care. We’re honoured to work with these exceptional clinicians, and to share their success!

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Asim Masood, Joint Chief Information Officer at William Osler Health System. His healthcare career has taken twists and turns over the years, with powerful lessons learned along the way: embrace every growth opportunity and stay true to what matters most: making a positive impact on the lives of patients.

Asim initially started his career in corporate finance but quickly realized that finance was not the right long term career path. With a lifelong interest in medicine, he decided to apply for medical school, ending up at the University of British Columbia on the west coast of Canada. Asim explained that despite his early desire to become a surgeon, he was also eager to learn “a bit of everything” (including how to ski!)

With this appetite for learning and new experiences, Asim welcomed opportunities to practice in a breadth of different clinical settings. His love of emergency medicine in particular led him to different regions throughout the country, from small hospitals in Ontario and BC to large trauma centres. He eventually moved into senior leadership roles including Emergency Department Chief and Deputy Chief of Staff, where he pioneered a new performance evaluation initiative within various hospitals. Over time, healthcare IT is a function that Asim happily ‘grew into’, understanding the immense power that technology has in improving clinicians’ workflows and connecting patients to their care.

Asim met Chris O’Connor, Think Research’s President and Founder, about 10 years back, when his team first implemented paper Order Sets. He explained that Think Research’s applications have allowed William Osler Health System to support patient care and quality, while keeping ‘toe-to-toe’ with larger hospitals’ software systems. As he aptly describes, “It’s been an incredible journey. I’ve been watching, participating and trying to assist where I can”, concluding that “Think Research has been an awesome partner for us here at William Osler Health System.”

A self-proclaimed optimist, Asim strongly believed that there are distinct ways we can “make the system better” for both patients and providers – without spending any additional money. He concluded, “we can just do better with what we’re spending.” It’s a driving motivation for his work and also a distinguishing aspect of his leadership style. As he’s learned, “physician leadership, governance and quality all go hand-in-hand. You can’t have one without the others.”

When asked what inspires him most about working in healthcare, Asim said, “it’s in my nature to connect with people”. He continued, “It’s an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact on people, at a critical juncture in their lives. As a healthcare provider, you’re often with patients at a time when they’re most vulnerable – in great pain or sorrow. To be able to help or impact them in some small (or big) way is such an honour and privilege.”

We couldn’t agree more. Our team at Think Research is also grateful for the insight, experience and leadership that Asim brings to the acute healthcare sector. As with any epic voyage, when he started his healthcare career, he couldn’t predict where he’d end up, or how meaningful that journey would become. From corporate finance to leading an emergency department and beyond, he’s made a substantial impact on our healthcare system. We’re proud to have him as part of our network.
