Individualized Medication Management
in Ontario Long-Term Care

A knowledge mobilization program, brought to you by GeneYouIn

Pillcheck is a test that predicts how you will respond to prescribed medications. This test helps determine the safest and most effective medications based on individual genetic profiles. The test covers commonly prescribed medications in several treatment areas, including cardiac and gastrointestinal conditions, mental health, pain management and oncology.

Everybody responds to medications differently. Currently, a physician prescribes drugs based on a resident’s symptoms and conditions. However, differences in how individual residents react to certain medications are not taken into consideration.

Through a grant from CABHI, Think Research, the Ontario Long Term Care Association, and GeneYouIn, the providers of Pillcheck, have been selected to drive the adoption of evidence-based, best practice pharmacogenetics testing, with a focus to introduce individualized pharmacy for residents in LTC homes.

Pillcheck helps determine the safest, most effective medication, saving time and money. Over 50% of individuals had their prescriptions modified based on test results since the Pillcheck program launched. Currently, the responsive homes on the program include Vermont Square, The O’Neill Centre, and Cedarvale Terrace. (Van Driest SL, Shi Y, Bowton EA, Schildcrout JS, Peterson JF, Pulley J, Denny JC, Roden DM. Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2014 Apr;95(4):423-31).

Personalizing residents’ medications based on their genetic make-up offers the potential for significant advances in optimizing drug therapy outcomes, minimizing adverse drug events for residents in LTC homes. We foresee the impact being significant, as 61% of residents take 10 medications or more. (Van Driest SL, Shi Y, Bowton EA, Schildcrout JS, Peterson JF, Pulley J, Denny JC, Roden DM. Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2014 Apr;95(4):423-31).
