Understanding risk factors, obstacles, and emerging treatments can help you better support&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/course\/esmo-in-focus-targeting-rare-oncogenes-and-kinase-inhibitor-resistant-tumours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung cancer<\/a> patients in your practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lung Cancer in Canada<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day, an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">82 Canadians<\/a> are diagnosed with lung cancer. Several risk factors increase the risk of developing the condition, and some unique obstacles in Canadian healthcare hinder early detection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Incidence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lung cancer is the leading cause of death for males and females in Canada and is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. The incidence is higher in males at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9067380\/\">61 per 100,000 cases<\/a> compared to 57.2 per 100,000 in females.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, reports estimated that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30,000 Canadians<\/a> would be diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 13 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. Lung cancer would also cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9067380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">24 percent<\/a> of all cancer-related deaths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Risk Factors&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoking is the most notable risk factor for lung cancer.&nbsp;About&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">72 percent<\/a> of lung cancer cases develop from smoking tobacco, and exposure to second-hand smoke increases the risk for non-smokers by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-concerns\/tobacco\/legislation\/tobacco-product-labelling\/second-hand-smoke.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 percent<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exposure to asbestos, radon, radiation, and occupational chemicals such as silica dust or welding fumes are also important risk factors. A history of lung cancer, lupus, or lung conditions like tuberculosis and COPD may also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase the risk<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Obstacles&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest obstacles to lung cancer care is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8161772\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">delay in diagnosis<\/a> and treatment, which leads to worse outcomes and higher mortality. These delays may happen because of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/24745332.2023.2255193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenges in Canadian healthcare<\/a>, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low lung cancer research funding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of full-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.partnershipagainstcancer.ca\/topics\/lung-cancer-screening-in-canada-2021-2022\/programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung cancer screening<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Care inequity for underrepresented populations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stigma around smoking and nicotine addiction&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complex drug approval process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When Should you Suspect Lung Cancer?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In many instances, symptoms of lung cancer do not appear until the disease is in an advanced stage. As lung cancer progresses, patients might experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a cough that gets worse or doesn&#8217;t go away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consistent chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>blood in mucus&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wheezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hoarseness or other changes to voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>swollen lymph nodes in the neck or above the collarbone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>headache<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients presenting any of these symptoms should be screened for lung cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment Options for Lung Cancer in Canada<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with many other types of cancer, local and systemic treatments are standard. While treatment varies depending on the specific type and stage of cancer, patients may benefit from one or more of these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdbriefcase.com\/course\/lung-cancer-risk-factors-newly-approved-therapies-and-the-role-of-the-pharmacist-in-lung-cancer-therapy-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung cancer treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Local Therapy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgery is a key treatment for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Depending on the disease progression, you may need to remove sections of or the entire lung via:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Video-assisted thoracic surgery&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thoracotomy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endobronchial therapies or radiation may be necessary to treat metastases or to help ease cancer symptoms in palliative stages. <a href=\"https:\/\/cancer.ca\/en\/cancer-information\/cancer-types\/lung\/treatment\/endobronchial-therapies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Endobronchial therapies<\/a> remove tumours or kill cancer cells using a bronchoscope and cryotherapy, laser surgery, electrocautery, or brachytherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Systemic Therapy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Systemic therapies affect the entire body and include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. These&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lungcancercanada.ca\/en-CA\/Lung-Cancer\/Treatment-Information\/Treatment-of-non-small-cell-lung-cancer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">treatments include<\/a> medications, infusions, and injections such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gefitinib or&nbsp;erlotinib \u2014 <\/strong>epidermal growth factor receptor protein-tyrosine kinase (EGFR-TK) inhibitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crizotinib \u2014&nbsp;<\/strong>a ROS1 gene inhibitor often used as a first-line treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alectinib, brigatinib, ceritinib \u2014&nbsp;<\/strong>ALK gene inhibitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Atezolizumab, durvalumab, pembrolizumab \u2014&nbsp;<\/strong>PD-1\/PD-L1 or immune checkpoint inhibitors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Emerging Therapies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new drug called nivolumab may improve NSCLC survival rates. In clinical trials, patients received the drug with chemotherapy before surgery. The study found that the combination reduced the risk of recurrence and cancer progression or death by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2202170?query=featured_home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">37 percent<\/a> compared to chemotherapy alone.
