Program funded by Ontario Health offers a secure platform to ensure seniors have remote access to the healthcare they need when in-person visits are not available

(Toronto, ON) August 13, 2020 Virtual Care has proven to be a safe and effective way of delivering healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been particularly true for long-term care homes, where the risk of outbreaks is higher and the impact of the disease on residents can be more serious.

Think Research, a developer of virtual care technology and clinical treatment protocols, has partnered with the five provincial health regions, in a program funded by Ontario Health, to make its VirtualCare platform available to all long-term care homes across Ontario at no cost until October 31, 2020.

VirtualCare is designed for use in long-term care and retirement settings, with support that is tailored to and understanding of the specific needs and use cases.

  • Notes are automatically pushed into PointClickCare/MED e-care to facilitate easy documentation
  • Providers are able to prescribe within the application to reduce transcription errors
  • Appointments can be scheduled directly online to save time

This initiative allows long-term care homes to connect with external clinicians via audio, video and chat in addition to facilitating greater information sharing through secure attachments, like photos of wounds.

Through the program, VirtualCare can be used with a wide variety of providers such as primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and dietitians. The platform is Canadian-made and fully compliant with PIPEDA legislation, with all data housed on a secure, Canadian cloud-based platform.

“VirtualCare has provided a safer and more efficient way to conduct physician appointments during COVID-19. With this tool, we have cut down the time spent on administrative tasks and on travel and increased the number of patients we can see. It’s not only beneficial for our residents, but for our team as well.”

  • Mylee MacDonald, Nurse Manager, King City Lodge

“Across the country, care providers are preparing for a potential second wave of COVID-19. We’ve seen how using a virtual care platform designed for use in a long-term care setting can ensure that residents continue to get the care they need, without the stress or risk of traveling out of the home. We’re pleased to be part of this program to provide our platform to long-term care homes as part of their strategy to continue delivering high-quality care for their residents.”
